Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.
The diverse crew also featured experts in various fields.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
